There isn't anything strange about them, they're just uncommon. Myself being a morning individual, I find I am the most active, most energetic, and most bouncy in the early morning. Morning DJ's have simply learned to tap into this phenomenon if they weren't born that way already- the real question is, why do all you non-morning people hire the morning types to start off your day? Just because we're happy and bouncy in the mornings doesn't mean it's going to rub off on you.

No, but it does mean we get some extra sleep while you guys are setting everything up.

It sure doesn't rub off on us, it rubs us up the wrong way. Personally I'd thoroughly prefer a miserable, hungover and mellow DJ in the morning to the chirpy, quiz-show mentality that floods the airwaves, but I have yet to find one, which is why I still wake up to my CD player.
I refer you to "Good Morning World" by The Senators, if you can track it down. There's a glorious line "The good morning DJ is wacky and fun/And I'd shoot that b*stard if I had a gun". Nice one.

The problem with morning people is that they're so evangelical about it. "I got up this morning and ran to Egypt, just in time to see the sun rise over Cairo. I was back in time for the milkman!" they seem to say. Early mornings and exercise go hand in hand - people rave on about how crisp the air is in the morning...it's not any crisper....just colder, you loons. No, to come back to the morning DJs, they are simply inhuman monsters paid to play irritating, tinny pop music and shout unfunny jokes at the populous. Their banter only wakes people up because as soon as you hear a hyperactive DJ you leap out of bed to bury your fist in the radio's speaker.

Morning radio DJs should be shot. Morning radio presenters must be preserved. There is a difference between the huge egomaniacs who insist on telling you how brilliant they are and the presenters on the likes of London's GLR who through their wit and natural behaviour are much more cuddly to wake up to.

Nick the Greek Posted Jul 2, 1999
Morning radio presenters are only one step away from the apalling Richard and Judy show. However, DJs as nausiating as Chris Evans should be shot. On the other hand, Zoe Ball does an excellent job on Radio 1 and I would not make it through Sat morning with a hangover unless I was listening to Chris Moyles.
If you want cuddly, buy a teddy bear and drink Horlicks...

Kopaylopa aka. Kayla Poponayla Posted Jul 2, 1999
Yes but again the question rings- why pay these people if it rubs you the wrong way? Why listen to them at all?
You support the very same system you detest!
I like our morning DJs- although the one I listen to typically just up and quit so they're going through a slew of quick fixes until they can find the final replacement.
Maybe the DJs are different where you are. It's hard to make comparisons when your radio options are fairly overwhelming. But for mellow news and gentle talk in the mornings, most people I know listen to NPR or some other equivalent. Non-abrasive for the poor poor groggy-morning person.

Oh- I'm not at all evangelical about being a morning person and would be the first to admit that come 11 p.m. I'm not going to be motivated or sociable, or awake, which can certainly put a crimp on one's social life. However, when you are a morning person, you do generally like it. Just like how night-owls like being night-owls. T'ain't nothing wrong with that.

No way. Chris Moyles is the most annoying, arrogant ego-centric guy on the radio. Zoe Ball I could deal with if her voice wasn't so damned squeaky and irritating. And she breaths far too much.
Terry Wogan is good, shame about the music. And Martin Kellner on Jazz FM is good too; I just hate the adverts on that station so don't listen.
Morning People
Nick the Greek Posted Jul 2, 1999
Isn't Terry Wogan dead yet? I thought (well hoped actually) that he might pop off during one of those witty, fantastic, Auntie's Bloomer's shows.
I agree about the ads though. I quite often listen to Classic FM, but am yet to purchase a Mitsubishi Shogun, despite how many times they try and persuade me.
Chris Moyles' wit is in his arrogance and over-sized ego. He rules!

Moyles is satan. i hate him. i hate him. i hate him. his "comedy" songs sound like they were written by five year olds. just try to make up a moyles style song yourself and see how easy it is. that impressionist bloke is the least entertaining impressionist i have ever heard (and saying "the least entertaining impressionist" is like saying "the least humane Nazi"). Comedy Dave should be called sycophantic talentless hanger on Dave. Bring back Adrian Juste.

Personally, I think that good morning breakfast shows ended with steve wright. I agree that chris evans should be shot (or failing that at least battered with a large stick) and that Chris moyles is an arrogant egocentric fool who ( in my opinion talks about his penis far too much) but he is funny) Mark and Lard were good, but you cant beat the Big Breakfast. Jonny Vaughn deserves some kind of award (if for nothing other than putting up with the first woman who could be called a blonde without using any peroxide. Bring back denise)

Time was (about 30 years ago), that most small towns would have a calm, smooth voice presenting a show with some title like "Milkman's Matinee." It would be on from about 4:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., before your electric-voiced joyboy took over. Now? Howard Stern! Go figure...

Taz Posted Jul 4, 1999
I was up and about at 5-30 this morning. It was a beautiful, balmy summer day. Even the birds were relaxed (they were singing some ambient Pink floyd stuff, as opposed to the normal 'oh god Leonard, you've overslept again' kind of shrieking. The last thing I wanted to do was put the radio on and listen to some ponce. Then again, I hadn't been to bed yet and I was very, very drunk.

Kelly Brook - what the @?*% !!
Totally dizzy, sooooo Essex (alright darlin'?!). Johnny Vaughan certainly does deserve a medal.
As for Mark & Lard, they should be banished to the graveyard shift at 4 am. Not even slightly amusing.

Lochangel Posted Jul 5, 1999
i am an avid watcher of our Kel - simply because however badly the day
goes or however much I balls up at least I haven't exposed myself as the intellectual equivalent of a Spice Girl's lyric on national tv. Some how watching her flail around hopelessly makes the mornings just that bit more bearable.
So I am with you on that one Nick my friend and as I handle the Student Elective Prizes for a medical charity just drop me a line if you need any cash.

Barbie Posted Jul 5, 1999
I definitely agree with you about Zoe Ball, she should get her act together and change her job to a Saturday (Very very early) TV show that is for 3 year olds. Maybe that way she could just disappear. However, Chris Moyles is a legend! Hop on Baby!
