Some of these statements seem to be interpreted a bit too literally.

Surely they all express sympathy, no matter what the wording. 'I'm sorry to hear that...' doesn't mean that you're sorry you heard it, it means the stuff that you've heard makes you sorry.

There's nothing sinister in the things people say to people who've just had something sad happen, just sympathy and understand.
