In his Talking Head play 'Soldiering On', we come across the recently widowed chipper old girl whose son is about to lose the family fortune and leave his mother broke and penniless. At the beginning of the play, the character comes across several people she knows and each one says sonething along the lines of you must throw yourself into some activity.
She happens upon a librarian who says 'You really should throw your self into something' to which the reply is;
'What? The canal?'
