"Greg Dyke, director general of the BBC, attacked Fox News and CNN for what he described as "gung-ho" coverage.

In contrast, the BBC was an "800lb gorilla" that was capable of holding off the Government's attempts to interfere in editorial decisions, he said."

Wow, somebody reads these journals?

That quote is slightly inaccurate. The original quote is from the bottom of the article, where they wrote, "Dyke attacked..." but I added the guy's full name and his position at BBC. The first quotation mark should have gone just before the word "attacked."

Anyhow, too bad the BBC isn't an "800lb gorilla" when it comes to lawsuits against ISPs and message boards, as Dyke claims they are with the government.

I keep reading interesting little snippets about the BBC in Private Eye - that 800lb gorilla thing was one of them...

Think I first saw a link to this story from cursor.org, but I've seen it on lots of leftist websites and blogs now, mostly for people who want to say, "See, even mainstream media from another country says US media has been biased."

Slightly left online journal which has received a number of (international?) prices. Most of it in German though, sorry.

Je ne parle pas en Allemande. (or in French very well, for that matter.)

Do we still have those pesky rules about foreign language getting zapped, or are they leaving us to reactively moderate that I hope?

Pity. The first one I linked to is really nice. It's about rescueing Jessica Lynch, the US perspective vs other sources. You might want to check out http://www.lisarein.com/michaelmoore/michaelmoorecompare.html , too. ;-) :-/ Good question, that. I had hoped that reactive moderation would mean you point out offensive language when you see it, and ignore it when you can't understand it. I mean, it would follow that reactive moderation does not imply postings are "guilty until proven innocent." If a person reads it and understands it but is not offended enough to yikes it, then it's like a tree falling in the woods without anyone hearing it or caring about it. They burn down the forest to prevent the threat of a tree falling too loudly. Oh well. We make do with ferns and saplings.

Re: accusation of CNN turning up the "boos" on Michael Moore -- I skimmed a version of this story on some other site, thememoryhole.com I think, but I didn't read the whole thing. The judgment seemed to be that a microphone on one side the stage might have recorded things differently than on the other side, maybe not an intentional misrepresentation by CNN? Either way, it doesn't sound as embarassing as their continued employment of Lou Dobbs.

Watching CNN at work today in the cafeteria, a friend of mine pointed to Rumsfeld and said, "That guy's cool." I don't want to argue with him about it, because we're friends and he's rather ignorant of current events, let alone international law or the history of US imperialism, so I just asked why he thought Rumsfeld was cool.

"He's always confident and he explains why the war is right."
