Gnomon - time to move on Posted May 23, 2009
I showed my daughter some of the BNP election literature yesterday. She's studying the Second World War in history, and was interested to see that Fascism is still alive and well. She could see many of Mussolini's techniques in their propaganda. One thing she spotted that I had missed - there were no women on the website. Is being a Nazi a male thing?

Use of force is not an argument. It is the abandonment of an argument, and to that extent, a capitulation.

>>Is being a Nazi a male thing?
Interestingly, in the National Front days, it seems to have been a gay thing. Nicholas Tyndall seems to have been shagging half of their (ahem) brightest and best.
There certainly are female Nazis. But I doubt it's a particularly female-friendly organisation. 'Traditional Values' and all that.

A more considered response to Recumbentman:
Granted, violence is a desperate measure. But it's an interesting ethical - and practical - question as to at what stage it should be resorted to.
For example - at what stage (if any) would it have been legitimate to assasinate Hitler? Before the Final Solution got underway in 1941? Or...A3054359?
I don't have a firm answer. However...I find it difficult to condemn the communities in northern England who used force to defend themselves against fascists in the summer of 2001. My only criticism is that by responding to deliberate and concerted provocation they left themselves open to media censure.

It would never have been legitimate to assassinate Hitler, much as one admires Von Trott and his circle.
I was disgusted when Bush called for Saddam "dead or alive". No good was achieved by his execution.
There are always sociopaths around, but it is not a good thing to elect one.

I agree that execution is a different case. It doesn't change anything.
I can't say I'm opposed to political violence *in principle*, though.

"What we urgently need, and must have to survive, is very much less democracy, a very much smaller, more carefully selected and more intelligent electorate... granting a vote to each and every one of the natives of Britain was madness... Lunacy could hardly go further!"

Sometimes we have to defend ourselves - or others - against it.
