...and he will come.' I think.
Field of Dreams. Either powerful affecting stuff or a pile of sentimental old tripe, but it used to set me off anyway.

Possibly...but I think FoD might have been quoting from an earlier source.

I currently have the old iconic white headphones in my lug 'oles. I've just heard what is now my favourite album opening line of all time. From 'The Comfort of Strangers' by Beth Orton, the track 'Worms':
Worms can't dance/ They haven't got the balls.

We don't need no thought control...no dark sarcasm in the classroom..

a) That's not a first line.
b) In Esperanto, it's:
'Ne malpalon sarkasmon nel klascambron' (circumflex on the C)
Lernejoj! Lasu infanjojn solajn!
Alia en alia ni estas sola brikoj en la muron.

Excuse me, I was being a sillius sodus. I blame the woman.
As for today...
"I decree that life today is simply taking and not giving
England is mine, and it owes me a living."
Apropos of nothing...
Researcher 556780 Posted Mar 9, 2006
But I didn't think that it mattered if it was the first line or not...just the ones that stick out in your mind...and get stuck in a loop coz you like them or they are just outright weird..or what'aveyou...

"I decree that life today is simply taking and not giving
England is mine, and it owes me a living."
"Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye"
Brilliant! It always puzzles me when people think The Smiths are miserable. They fail to recognise Morrisey's comic genius.
"As the flames rose
To her Roman nose
And her walkman started to melt."
Meanwhile, inspired by Marks and Spencer:
"You've done it all, you've broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor"

Yeah, the poor fools - the downbeat songs are actually in the minority [just]. Moz has every right to feel hard done by
Meanwhile this isn't a bad album-opener:
"Tears on the sleeve of a man
Don't want to be a boy today."
One Tori I would vote for
And by the way Ed, you've got mail...

I'm not aware of too many things,
I know what I know, if you know what mean..

"Van Gough did some eyeball pleasers
He must have been a pencil squeezer
He didn't do the Mona Lisa
That was an Italian geezer."
Ian Drury & The Blockheads

Impresionante! One or two little coincidences...
(1) Just a couple of weeks ago, I was seized by the imperative to hear "Up Town Top Rankin'", though I couldn't (at first) remember the title. I managed, finally, to find a clip of it on one of the lyrics' sites - love that sound.
(2) My favourite English 'patient' downloads from a movie channel and supplies me with videos regularly; this week's film....'Rumble Fish'.
(3) "and don't let this put you off..." I think I've got a pretty good reason not to be offput; number 24 on your list is my constant, and may help to explain 'my' tag.
