Bassman - Funny how people never ceases to amaze me! Posted Apr 7, 2005
Hi Musashi,
Or should that be Himura?
I can never remember which is the given name and which the surname with orientals. Maybe I should try harder.
As you can tell by my name, I am somewhat musical, I play Bass Guitar in a Midlands Covers Band. We've had people tell us we're the best in the country at what we do, which is a great accolade, my slightly synical side says that, that person had obviously seen all the other similar bands to make such a comment.... No I thought not!
It's taken me years to realise that there is no "Bad" music - just stuff I don't like. I always hated people slating the bands I really loved saying they were "Crap" just because they didn't play the music that person liked. Then I find that I was guilty of just the same, so I have adopted (or tried to) a different attitude.
As for my tastes.... I'll run this past you....
The first band I bought any stuff by was Abba. I can actually admit to this now, as they're seen a a cool band these days - but that doesn't take away from the fact that Benny and Bjorn wrote some very skillfully crafted pop songs. The girls were fantastic too.
My next discovery was The Stranglers. I remember reading an article in the NME one time and the heading was "The Stranglers - Punk - Too old to be - Too outrageous not to be." I think that said it all. Once again, great musicians, especially Dave Greenfield on Keys and Jean Jacques Burnel on Bass, which I suppose sowed the seeds of my love for playing and performing. I don't think I'd ever really heard a bass guitar before JJ - I hear them all now.
I didn't get seriously into anyone else, until I left school and started work. Some of the guys got me a ticket to see Genesis at the Lyceum May 1980, which I will remember till my last breath. It was there that I learned what music was all about - playing in front of hundreds - even thousands of fans. Volume like I'd never heard before, lights like I'd never seen before, intricate music, but so much better than the classical stuff that was forced down your throat at school. Prog Rock was awesome.
The guys where I worked got me into loads of bands - Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Deep Purple, AC/DC Black Sabbath, Motorhead and the likes. I still loved Genesis and prog, so later got into Marillion, Pink Floyd, Pendragon,Yes and Rush. Somewhere along the line I got the bug for Queen. Probably the best popular rock band ever. In my opinion the Stones are a Blues band - essentially and of course the Fab 4 were purely a "POP" band.
I've listened to loads of stuff over the years, and my taste has widened dramatically. I would have to say my fave male singer is Seal - seen him 4 times and my fave female singer is Anastacia, I saw her for the first time (and not the last - I hope) last year. I'd love to hear a decent collaboration between the two of them. As for my fave piece of music, I would say the live version of "Dance on a Volcano" from Seconds Out - the second Genesis live album.
In more recent years I've got into Hoobastank, Incubus, Nickelback and re-discovered Level 42.
So what do you think?
