Hi Nigel; sorry, didn't see this till now; i've been in much the same state....you're certainly not alone. Do email if it helps, or MSN if you're able to.

It *will* pass, but until it does; all we can do is keep on keeping on.

Reflections on cyclothymia:

A. The mania seizes and one is driven.

B. One drives oneself anyway against necessity.

...then the crash comes.

over the last 10 or so years, as things got worse for me.
-
i made my mind up, whatever happened along the way, i had to face it, and never let it get me down, if you even let your gaurd down, and depression gets hold, then its all the way down,
-
you can say its like having a virus in the pc, you use the antivir or adaware, to get rid.
-
sometimes it doesnt go, and later comes back, but you still keep trying to get it gone.
-
once you say, damb it, then the virus as you, and the pc is a mess in no time.and no safegaurd, you lost. smiley - dragon jim

Relax, go with flow, don't even try to fight it. For me, readings from Bertrand Russell or e.e.cummings sometimes help.

I think you're right on the 'wetware' analogy. Its often like a situation where the pc has crashed, everything has seized up and all of the control buttons have gone dead. Nothing to do but give the system time work its conflicts out (or hit the 'esc' button and hold it down, or pull the plug if its a questionable download).

I like that one too. They used to have a late night movie matinee called "Movies Till Dawn" in the southern California late night programming, aired at various times on several of the soCal local TV stations. Then funding, (supplied mainly by used car dealerships) lapsed in the late seventies and early 1980s and on insomniac nights I'd search for entertainment programming and find nothing, whimpering a subjective and subdued internal whimper. Then came TMC and AMC and my movies till dawn were back. ...and I'd even have an alternative to the morning news over breakfast if I didn't want to watch it.

Hello All smiley - biggrin

I am feeling better with the help of my friends on h2g2 smiley - smiley. You are right Jim, it is a matter of just facing everything life throws at us and dealing with it in the best possible way. My problem is worrying beforehand over silly things really like going out, "will I be okay?, will I meet a gang of youths and get beat up? Will I cope with that hospital appointment?".

Usually things turn out okay in the end and worrying was not needed. The tablets I take help but the unwanted side effects do not. They can make me sleepy, sometimes high then really low. They do help though, I just alter the dose to how I am feeling on the day.

Terri, hopefully Spring will bring some sunshine soon which always makes me feel a little better smiley - ok. I can get out in the garden, do a little and leave a lot smiley - laugh.

ITIWBS, who is Bertrand Russell and e.e.cummings? I will have to put their names into google and see what comes up.

Take care. Just reloading my anti-virus software so it will prevent any virus attacking my body smiley - laugh.

Bertrand Russell, a philosopher. e.e. cummings, a poet. Both notable for their stream of consciousness approach to existential needs.

Jim I understand entirely. My medical is up next year and the amount of form filling and question answering is a nightmare as I am sure you know smiley - ok.

It is a difficult and stressful time eagerly waiting for the brown envelope to drop on the mat like a ton weight smiley - biggrin.

smiley - goodluck I hope you hear good news soon.

ITIWBS, thanks for the information smiley - cheers.

All the best.

Nigel smiley - cheers

Jim and Nigel, I'm going through a measure of that now on a pre-retirement process. I do have some idea of what you mean, a daunting prospect and exhausting process.smiley - goodluck

Glad you're beginning to climb out of the nasty pit Nigel.

One thing that i found really helps, once you can bear any sort of noise, is music, i personally go for stuff like Talking Heads;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_Heads

which is emotive, but positive, Elvis Costello is another good one, reggae/ska stuff in general or complex rhythms you need to concentrate on & lyrics which do relate to what you've been going through.

Do you play any sort of instrument, or do any sort of smiley - artist stuff...because once you are in the "recovering from the pit" phase, anything like that really does seem to help; so long as you don't damn yourself with the idea of "end result must be perfect"; just "hey, this is Fun playing around like a kid with sound, colour, plants, whatever..hey, you know what? I'm a Grown Up & i can do whatever i bloody well want!"smiley - evilgrin...obviously, so long as it ain't going to harm anyone else; you are Free!
