h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

So I come back to H2G2 (after one of my entries was approved, huzzah) to discover that the front page has been taken over by The Ugly Police.

What the hell's it supposed to be? Yeuch.

And they've disabled JavaScript from homepages, seemingly, which is a shame.

What is Yeuch?
What excatly is The Ugly Police?

Yeuch = that kind of noise that you make when you vomit

The Ugly Police = those kind of people in power (like the people in charge of H2G2) who make web-pages that are ugly.

Did you like the classic skin better?
(Actually everyone likes the classic skin better...)
But it's not that ugly!
I think there should be a link to the latest entry of a forum, it takes me years to make a posting to a busy forum.

You don't have to use alabaster if you dont want to, the classic goo still exists.

You can select either skin as your default, or you can view an individual page in either skin.

To set the default skin go to the "my details" button on your home page you should then have a pull down menu for the choice of skin.

If you want to change skins just to view one page you can add ?skin=classic or ?skin=alabaster to the page address

For example

http://www.h2g2.com/U58270?skin=classic

&

http://www.h2g2.com/U58270?skin=alabaster

Should show Your page in the classic goo and alabaster respectivly.

One note on the alabaster skin
There are a quite a few pages about which don't look good in it because of the colours used.
I suppose its only a matter of time before new pages evolve which won't look good in the classic goo.

Ah, that's interesting. Although, as soon as you hit a button on the "alabaster" skin, it pops back to the "classic" skin anyway.

I'm assuming that the H2G2 people will be pushing the alabaster skin our as the default at some stage. It's ugly, ugly, ugly, and it doesn't support those nice split tables.

Was there a reason why JavaScript has been switched off? Where should I be reading about it?

The alabaster skin is already being pushed as it is now the default for new users, however I suspect that the problems already being experienced due to the difference in colour schemes will lead to other skins being developed.
Ps
I prefer the screen layout in alabaster its just the colour scheme that gives trouble, but these things are just a matter of taste

Jim's reason for proposing to turn off java script support is that there have been some instances of it being misused on the site and therefore causing problems.

Most of these thing are in the feedback forum or chase them via Bruces page and his guide ML clinic.
