My Saddest Day As A City Fan

Post 1

The tears were already flowing last Saturday when York lost against Doncaster, their 18th game without a win. That pretty much secured our fate, we could get enough points to pull level with some of the other teams in the relegation zone, but our shocking goal difference of -30 was nowhere near our closest rivals (-14).

So it was that over 3000 heavy hearted City fans arrived at Bootham Crescent for our last league game there for the forseeable future at least. As I sat in my old season ticket seat in the pop stand (W F 5), i could feel tears welling in my eyes again, but I was determined not to cry before the game had even kicked off.

The match started well as we overcame the fact that 7 of our 1st team players had left the club under mutual terms that week, and Stuart Wise managed to score in the first 5 minutes. However, the joy was not to last, and Leyton Orient scored 2 goals to win the match.

As the final whistle blew, something extraordinary happened. The pitch invasion is an event usually seen when a team has been promoted or narrowly escaped relegation, but believe it or not, hundreds of dedicated city fans crowded onto the pitch with no resistance from the security.

Myself, my brother Sam and my dad made our way onto the pitch, I hugged Chris Brass, our player manager, and we all headed to the tunnel. The players came back out of the dressing room, and there was loads of singing and applause for the team, along with many many tears - myself included, singing through my tears and sobs.

From Bootham Crescent comes the promise of the fans and team...

WE'LL BE BACK, WE'LL BE BACK, WE'LL BE BACK

#York City 'til I die...#
