GodBen (The Magical Astronomer) - 00000011

Well I was sitting here at my computer last night chatting away on H2G2 when suddenly something completely unexpected happened.

Yes, I know I gave away the answer in the title. smiley - erm

And it wasn't so unexpected either as it happened on Doobry (Saturd*y) night as well. smiley - erm

Anyway the power went, at around 8:30pm while in the middle of writing a post, and it was so dark that I honestly couldn't see anything we all had to go down to the sitting room where there was candles and sit around and do nothing. My father was out in the camper van playing guitar (we don't let him play in the house) and he didn't even know the power was gone until we told him. So we all sat around doing nothing until the dreaded time of 9:30pm came and went and it became obvious that the power wasn't going to come back in time for me to see the new episode of Scrubs. smiley - wah

Of course it came back just 10 minutes after it ended at 10:10pm. Honestly, what sort of country am I living in when the power goes twice in three days? It's just plain wrong. smiley - cross

So does anyone know where I can download Scrubs? smiley - winkeye

Damn you Cal! There was thousands of other people in the city who wanted to watch Scrubs as well, and you cut the power on them too! smiley - wah

Interesting fact, the power didn't go in Limericks worst neighborhoods (Southhill, Garryown).

Godben you don't know how lucky you are to have a father who plays guitar - and a campervan. Fancy making him sit outside the house - you deserve to miss your 'scrubs' programme!smiley - smiley

mmmmm, not entirely sure I believe you; but being a decent fair minded Britsmiley - laugh, I might give you the benefit of the doubt on this occassion. You could try downloading Scrubs from the internet.

riotact : like a phoenix from the ashes

what sort of country is it where power goes down regularly? in california recently (the undisputed world leader of everything, just ask anyone...) i experienced about half a dozen blackouts in 4 months; the biggest involved the whole town (150,000 souls) and lasted about 8 hours. a great leap forward considering that a couple of years ago there were "rolling blackouts", where certain areas were blacked out on a rotating basis: sorry folks, there's not enough juice to go around, wait your turn... if the infrastructures are that similar, democracy for iraq can't be far behind;, hooray!

meanwhile, we poor hottentots in the wilds of darkest france have had about 1 blackout in about 15 years, it lasted about 30 seconds.

Fish's Freak

If people insist on using up all the power with their PCs, TVs and whatnot, then a power shortage is inevitable...

air conditioning doesn't help, either...

it's funny; in winter my folks set the thermostat at 72°, and in summer at 68°...

but let's not forget that it is the divine right of one nation under god to consume twice as much energy as europeans and 10 times as much as the southern hemisphere.

but the real root of the problem 2 years ago was the decision to consider power and water as enterprises which must be profitable and not as a public need to be met. btw, the water in my mom's neighborhood, though expensive, is maybe potable, maybe not. in any case, everyone buys bottled water, and the water fountains in parks and schools have been turned off. it's the home of the brave, not the stupid!

But there's no power shortage problem in Ireland, and our electricity is a public service paid for by the government. We don't have air conditioning (we light fires instead). And all that was on at the time was a TV, a PC and a few lightbulbs.

So there's your answer. The irish electricity board was so freaked by the unexpected lack of rain, it just went phutt!
