Bernard Black is my role model!
An anti-social alcoholic chainsmoking bookshop owner who hates to sell books!
well everyone has to have something to aim at

Very interesting--is this someone you know personally? I suppose it takes a lot of effort to achieve that.

Sadly not a RL person but a character in a UK sitcom, currently the only thing on TV I watch

And a lovely role model I'm sure he is!
I could never sell books if I owned a book store...I would keep changing the hours it was opened, put restrictions, make rules, anything to protect my books.

Bernard just swears at them, lives in filth (not sure I could do that) and mistreats his assistant Mannie

I always wanted to own a bookshop...
...and by the sounds of it, that all I'm missing !

Hi Tanzen!
And yes, I would love to own a bookstore as well. I suppose almost anyone on h2g2 would...

I would love to own a bookstore, but it wouldn't be very profitable. I would keep taking books for myself, and then if anyone walked in who looked like they enjoyed reading, I would start giving them free books. Then if anyone walked in who looked like they DIDN'T like to read, I would start giving them free books to encourage them. But it would be a very pleasant way to go bankrupt.
There is someone in real life who's kind of like that Black guy. His name is The Gord (www.actsofgord.com) and he runs a video game store in Canada. He seems like a pretty good guy, except that all the stupid people who shop in his store have turned him bad. (Read his stories. ) So I think the best way to become like your role model is to own a bookstore first, and then it's only a matter of time.

That's a pretty good point !
Maybe we should gather together all the people geographically and co-own stores all ove rhte world...
...I'm really suprised that such a large assembly of people haven't tried to take over the world yet....

If anyone can do it, we hitchhikers can!
I volunteer to head the Schenectady chapter (not that that's saying much).

Well, if we can't do it through our smarts ...sheer numbers should be able to do somethin !
...I volunteer NOT to lead the Melbourne chapter...I'm not good at being in charge of people....
(except ion harem situations of cours )

Just because Kurt Vonnegut talks about Schenectady in all his books doesn't tell you anything! (Actually, come to think of it, it tells you a lot!) But I'll also head the California chapter (that's where I live when I'm not in college), and there's lots of ignorant masses there for us to conquer, muaaaahaahahaHAAA!!!!!!!!

That's why God invented calling cards dear !
Having said that, you'd be praying for an annoying complaint if I ever happened upon your number

I get those already
What I suspect I'd have is an irate teamleader telling me to stop chatting and take some calls from customers so do it, except I don't think you can call us from overseas
