My first Day in Hobart, Tasmania

Post 1

Vestboy

I arrived last night when it was quite dark and friends met me at the airport and took me to where I was staying. Today I have been able to look around in the daylight and I really like it. It is green and mountainous, a bit like Wales. It was rainy and overcast when I left Sydney. Today it is sunny and bright and I had a very pleasant lunch outdoors. Mount Wellington is very impressive and apparently had snow on it up until last week. I'm not sure how much of the Island I'll get to see while I am here (business trip for two weeks) but my hosts are a lovely bunch and I'm sure they will let me have a look around.

The flight from Sydney is only an hour and a half and it's not too expensive. Budget airlines are here too. I'm hoping to get to Melbourne in November to see friends there.

How is life down under going, Vestboy?

Hi David,
I'm really enjoying it. I am working with some really nice people in an international organisation for adults with learning difficulties. There is one of our communities near you in Canterbury. The organisation, L'Arche, operates in 30+ countries, including Bangladesh and Haiti.

33 years ago I worked in the Kent community and now I am working for them again, but on the other side of the world. Life can be funny like that sometimes.

I hope your film career is every bit as much fun as your stage career is.

Ah, L'Arche. They have a crafts shop about 100 yards from my house!

Really glad you're enjoying it.

One of my friends in Kent died yesterday. He had severe disabilities, and a rare, lovely smile. The leader of the community was on a special visit to Australia when I first arrived and we have been in contact quite a lot. She told me that he was ill but I did not realise how ill. I was very sad to hear of the death of someone I have known for such a long time.

I used to run the craft workshop in the late 1970's but we did not have an outlet in Canterbury then. There is a L'Arche house in Barfreston and that's the one where I lived.

I don't think I've ever been to Barfreston. Strangely enough, I was passing the L'Arche outlet last week and thought I ought to check it out for Christmas present ideas. I shall definitely do so. Much more satisfying than an Amazon run, and less stressful than the High Street, plus it supports something genuinely worthwhile.
