A friend of mine who is a teacher recounted a school story that had happened to him while we were on a walk in Tring.
He was taking the register calling out the pupil's names:
"Alexander!"
"Here sir, but would you call me Alex, sir?"
"OK, Alex. Benedict!"
"Here sir, but would you call me Ben, sir?"
"OK, Ben. Lee!"
Lee had a big grin on his face and thought he would be humorous.
"Here sir, but would you call me Lee, sir?"
"OK, Lisa"

I had a science teacher who used an inventive register-taking technique. She would just ask us who was missing, since we sat at the same stools in every lesson, so we ought to be able to tell who was missing from our area. However, as people moved away or got changed to a different stream, we would continue to name them as missing before anyone who was actually supposed to be there. She took it in good humour, though.
