Hmmm. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, Elly, but you are right ... CYA stands for exactly what you mentioned above. It's a widely used term in the US to describe the need to defend yourself, have an alibi, and cover all possible outcomes to avoid getting into trouble.

I certainly knew what CYA meant as soon as I read that posting. It's not often used here, but a friend of mine used to occasionally give me that exact bit of advice.
