Annoying Business

One of my cats has taken to going for a No 2 at 3am in the morning. Admittedly, with the shift to British Summer time, this now falls around 4am... but that, to be honest, is worse. I mean, I have to get up around 6am to get ready and out to work, so waking up at 4am means less than two hours to get back to sleep... and it almost isn't worth it.
How does he wake me? His digging. He digs deep to begin with, does his business and then piles the entire content of the tray on top of it (and across the bathroom floor). Scratch scratch scratch. I have tried earplugs - but if I put them in at bedtime, they have usually worked their way free by 4am. I originally started wearing the ear plugs because my partner had a bad cough and it took her a while to get to sleep - so, the plugs assisted me in getting to sleep in the meantime (selfish, I know... but did I mention I need to be up at 6am?!).
I shall have to find some other solution. Maybe leaving the cat out all night or moving the litter tray somewhere out of ear shot.
