Of course, don't leave in silly things that you're editing.
But don't mess around with unsplitting infinitives.

What's wrong with a split infinitive? (and how many 'i's are there in that word?)

you mean something like "where are you trying to go to?" as opposed to "where is it you're trying to go?" ?
Just grammar I guess - I thin, the second one reads a little better, and I'd use it if I was writing, but probably the first if I was talking.
I just don't like ending sentences with things like 'to' or 'with' or other such prepositions - like I don't like to start sentences with But or And when I'm writing essays.

Writing essays is one thing, and starting sentences with 'but' or 'and' doesn't work in formal writing, I agree, but explain what's wrong with a split infinitive.
