Florida Sailor All is well with the world

For all of us who love writing she is a inspiration http://www.facebook.com/discoverrealflorida/posts/1223965884304925

Her stories bring rural Florida to life. I did write a page about her in my Journal a couple years ago for NoJoPoMo

Sorry Bluebottle, I don't think she ever even mentioned the IOW

I should probably read "The Yearling."

I will probably always think of Mary Steenbergen when I think of her, as Steenbergen played her in the movie "Cross Creek."

Florida Sailor All is well with the world

Marjory's home is open as a state historic site just a few miles from US Highway 301 a little north of the city of Ocala. Cross Creek itself is several miles farther to the west.

In Florida we have two south to north Interstate Highways - I-75 runs up the west coast and goes to Michigan, I-95 runs up the east coast and continues into New England. US 301 runs diagonally between them and provides a great link between them from Ocala and Jacksonville.

I have often used this route and have seen the signs for her homestead, but I was usually to anxious to get to my job-site up north, or in a hurry to get home to stop.

One afternoon I was passing at about 4:30 in the afternoon and I decided to stop. By the time I reached the house the Docients sadly told me that they had already given their last tour and were getting ready to close the house for the night. I do not ever ask for special treatment, but on this night I told them that I was a State Park volunteer at Fort Foster A87761631. I asked them if I could help them secure the house hoping to at least get a look inside. They agreed and as we went from room to room they pointed out some of the more interesting things.

It was winter, and a hard freeze was predicted by morning. One of the house kittens was missing! They asked me if I would help them search the barn and other out-buildings. After almost an hour we found the little orange tabby and returned her to the house. I was given a sack of oranges from the grove as a thank-you.

The Yearning is an excellent story, as usual the book is far better than the film, even though the film was better than usual.

It's one of the many books that I've heard about but never read....
