Just what sort of a sick educational system have we got anyway?
Mr. Carrot Started conversation Jan 8, 2004
I've just come home from a science lab-test. It went fine with me, as it so often does, especially in science, but still... Two out of the nine people in my lab-test group actually broke down and started crying during or after the test. One of those two is what you might call a straight-A student. Under normal circumstances, this shouldn't happen (and especially when we've just returned rested from the exceptionally long Christmas hols). My guess is that it had something to do with the enormous amount of work and stress that our teachers are putting us through, which again is because of our somewhat over-ambitious curriculum. Just what the are the politicians thinking of??? They're running youngsters through impossibly demanding curriculums, at exactly the time when they have the highest amount of emotional problems... No wonder we have high suicide rates in Norway. I think that most of my class must be on the verge of having a burnout... It's a miracle that nothing has happened yet? Where the is our educational minister when we need her? She's been wrecking the whole school system ever since she started work, and now she's not even willing to listen to our feedback. It's her responsibility to ensure that we get a good education. If we burn out now, then we won't be able to catch up for at least a year... Maybe more...

I feel your pain, as you know. Here, they won't take students out of classes that they are on the verge of failing because they aren't failing. What kind of rationale is that? Let the student fail the class, THEN stick them in a lower lever one. Education directors must not have a brain in their skull.

Independent study works fine with me, but it doesn't do so with everyone else. One has to make room for differences.

independent study would work better for me. no teacher conflicts, no personality-challenged students. sounds fabulous.

I get on very well with the teachers... I don't think it's that much of a problem, the moment you turn 'em into enemies is the moment they'll turn on you... I see it as my duty to help the personality-challenged students along as much as I can. I do see your point, though. Self study would prolly benefit me. Still, there are somethings that are easier when they are explained by a teacher, willing to answer your questions, than when they are explained by a book, which is static information.

All of my teachers love me, EXCEPT for this one. She says that I'm too cynical, too self-reinforcing, and too independent. Oh, well, you can't account for a pile of nincompoops. It's literature...you can get it all out of a book or from a lit teacher who likes you...

The science teacher loves me. She makes a point of underlining the words "VERY GOOD" every time she returns a project or a lab report to me...
Indeed. And the teachers all eat it raw...
