Well today has been a little traumatic(again)!!
As most friends know my mother is in hospital after having a fall at the residential home she has lived in for the past
six years.SShe had this THIRD fall after been out of hospital for about twelve days, after having a hip replacement, due to fracturing her hip in the second fall.
A few weeks ago she was taking herself for a walk round the home ,and to the loo,and feeding herself when her meals arrived.Today we have had to go looking for a nursing home for her, because she can't do any of these things now,so can no longer stay in her home of the past six years.
The people that were so caring, and so happy when we saved the home from the threat of closure, haven't even asked how she is???
Now it is going to cost around £500 a week for the extra care she needs!!!!!!So much for her carers, the people I called her extended family!!!! And so much for the governments "care for the elderly"policies.

i must admit that i don't know much about care homes, but i do know they're thrown up 10 a penny nowadays by some fast cats wanting to cash in, and that not all have properly trained staff.... it's a sad state of affairs in this day and age when the government can't provide for those that have paid their dues to them and society for most of their lives in the first place.. and obviously your mam played her part in serving the community as she was a shop owner/keeper....
good luck sal.... smiley - love

Oh smurfles how awful!
You fought your heart out for that place.
I hope they show some appreciation even if they cannot fix this current situation.

I suppose regulations and rules win out.
It has to be very distressing.
They should help by giving you information and best choices rather than have all of that end up on you. I cannot imagine there are too many choices for that level of care. I do hope there is a good place close so you can check up on her like you have been.

It was exhausting without all of this changing.
It will certainly take more one on one attention than she had been recieving at a higher functioning level.

She seemed rather content before all of this started.
Sorry you have all the added pressures on the family.
I hope that you can take care of yourself during all of this.
You will need your strength for the transition.
You cannot do it all so I will hope you get some quality help.
Do social workers or nurses help to do placements there?

Also Ran1-hope springs eternal

Dear Smurfles,

I am so sorry that you and your Mum are having this sad ending to life. It is so tragic problems cannot be recognised and treated as "treatable" and not as hurdles which cannot be overcome.

I wish you well in your endeavours.

With affection

hi sal.

is a shame when it comes to this.. you pay for the care all of your life and when you need it, you still have to pay.

you would think that with everyone growing that much older that the powers to be would realise it and put more money into the caring of our elder relatives.

lets hope that your mother is on the mend soon and you dont have that added stress in your life

Thank you to everyonesmiley - hug.
Abbi,we have had a social worker assigned to us from the hospital, they have tried to help with a placement, but one nursing home had hand basins hanging off the wall, and no carpets, down, just stone floors!!!!! It gets harder the more places we see,but hopefully we have a fairly local one to look at tomorrow.
The government are a disgrace when it comes to caring for our elderly, and the hospitals don't have the staff to cope, with the situation seeming to get worse instead of better.
I'm sure that we'll all feel better when mum is settled somewhere, and able to rest easier too.
