or, alternatively, all memory of there ever having *been* backlog...

It would be better if it got rid of the backlog though. If it just gets rid of the memories, someone will inevitably stumble across it and reannounce its existance to the world. However if it got rid of both, then we wouldn't remember it and no one will be able to find it.
