In an historic vote (158-133), the House passed Bill C-38, the so-called "same-sex marriage bill".

This clears the way to the new Civil Marriage legislation becoming law.

In a last-ditch effort and despite claims that they wouldn't "interfere" with the final reading and vote, the Conservative Party made a motion to have the bill passed back for rewording dealing with religious freedoms. However, this motion was voted down. As a munber of rewordings to clarify the rights for religious bodies.

Stephen Harper, in comments after the vote reiterrated his views (moronic though they are) that because the Liberals voted FOR the bill, it somehow was not "legitimate" in the eyes of "most Canadians".

Considering the fact that this was a "free" vote, enabling party members to vote with their conscience, and, as was pointed out, the Conservatives don't seem to question the validity of a vote where the Bloc votes with the Conservatives, IMHO, this is simply a case of sour grapes.

Oddly enough, the sky did not fall immediately after the announcement of the passage of the Bill.

With the greatest of respect, I say to Stephen Harper and his party.... "PTTTHHHHTPPPPTTTHHHHH!!!!!!!"

Once again Canada does the right, essentially decent thing, despite the best efforts of the reactionary conservative dingbats among us.

Yay, Canada!

Can we borrow your legislature, please? Ours doesn't seem to be working so well here in the States....

The problem is that if we sent you the bad slightly-larger-than-half-but-not-as-many-as-the-total-of-all-the-other-guys, you would just have more of the same and if we sent you the good (or, should we say, the marginally better than) slightly-smaller-than-half-unless-you-add-the-guys-who-decided-they-liked-the-smaller-than-half-marginally-less-than-they-liked-the-slightly-larger-than-half-so-supported-the-slightly-smaller-than-half-making-a-slightly-more-than-half, we would be stuck with the slightly-larger-than-half-who-would-then-be-100%...

I am watching this rather more hiarious than usual Royal Canadian Air Farce which has cameos with many of the, then current (this was a couple of years old), politicans. I think it must be one of their New Years shows.

If there is anything our politicians excell in is the ability to take a joke and even take part in the joke (on their own time).
