How far do you have to go to find a firing range?

I was just milling about in my journal, checking some old posts, when I realized you'd posted to one of my threads ages ago and I never answered you. Sorry 'bout that! No slur intended, I just missed you somehow!

As far as just practicing, there's an old gravel pit <5 miles from my house that I go to. The cliff that forms the backstop is probably 30-40 feet high, and the area's big enough I can practice 50yd shots when I want. Though I mostly concentrate from the 25 on in, since that's where most of our rounds are from. Unfortunately, I can't claim to practice as much as I should, as I've developed fairly severe arthritis in my shooting hand, so it's quite painful to do more than 50 rounds or so. I'm trying to get out more frequently, and just shoot a box at a time, versus going out for marathon target practice.

There is a real range at La Luz, maybe 30 miles from me, but the gravel pit is much closer and more convenient. When all the officers from my region get together for Quals, we go to Carlsbad, which is about a 3 hour drive for me. But it's a nice range, and the most central location for all the parks in the SE quad.
