The brave family hound
Odo Started conversation Mar 4, 2003
The family has shown his true colours yet again. He’s a larger than is usual for the breed, Welsh springer spaniel and is completely soppy. As long as you’re not a black toy poodle he’s the friendliest creature you could meet.
He likes to think he’s brave but he has yet to convince us. One of his favorite pass times when out walking is chasing the local wildlife. Squirrels had him confused for a long time because they just disappeared when he though he had them cornered against a handy tree.
Whilst out the other day he saw a fox slinking across the field at the edge of the wood. Off he shot in hot pursuit. From the reports of the incident I’m guessing that it was an old fox because instead of running it crouched down, made itself look as large as possible and stayed still snarling and ready to attack.
Morgan got to within six feet and stopped. What was he supposed to do now? He circled round keeping a reasonable distance between himself and the creature so that he had a head start if he needed to run. Nothing happened, so he stopped a bit longer and had a go at staring the creature out. Still no response except a lot of swearing and cursing from the fox.
He then decided there was no point staying to play with such an uncooperative chap, and back he trotted to the parents looking slightly sheepish, with tail going as if to say “See, I told him to stay away and he listened, aren’t I wonderful.” Soppy idiot!

I'm surprised the fox didn't savage him, actually. They're vicious
little buggers.
I think we ought to get Morgan and George together at some point. It may be a real battle of wits.

That would be an interesting one to watch.
Morgan would probably attempt to approach George, receive either a well aimed claw to his nose or a piercing look. This would flaw Morgan and then they could both sit and stare at each other for a bit.
Morgan would decide that this wasn’t much fun and that there were plenty of people about who he would like to go and talk to.
George would emerge the winner me thinks!

I suspect so. He certainly savaged the last spaniel he met, although it was only a puppy, and quite a lot smaller than him.

Not any cat, he's fairly good a chasing the local ones in the village.
George is rather a unique with a lot of personality. He’s also HUGE!!

The whole cat was smaller then the dog's head!

Aww!
But it all sounds so familiar- my Lottie (black and white Cocker spaniel) is exactly the same.
Doncha just love dogs??

*nods* Mine loves all things human. She just can't abide other dogs. Or anything else for that matter. But then, she's too much of a wimp to do anything about it. She hides in our legs instead. Bless.

I prefer cat's to dogs, I don't hate dogs, I just prefer cats.

Nope, cats don't like me, simple as that. They never have done. Can't say I really mind, slippery creatures. Though I did have one that liked to sit on my back or around my neck. Stupid that one was.

A black that deigned to share the house with a family I used to baby-sit for used to curl up on me and then start needing with it’s paws.
I’d bung the our, close the door and settle down again. The only problem with this was that the creature could open doors and would be straight back in again.
It’s all cupboard love with cats; they’d be quite happy without humans. Kittens can be fun to play with though.

You wouldn't know that from my Dad's cat.
My Dad left to go on holiday yesterday, and the cat's been staring out of the window ever since. Sad, really.
