"I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house down!"

Thankfully, houses made from straw bales are suprisingly sturdy and long-lasting (some could last in theory for hundreds of years) - why do I know this? Because I've spent the best part of a day looking up their construction and longevity on the net....

Let me explain...

My partner and I want to move. We want to live in the country. We want to live in a big house. We want to have land for horses and stuff. We can't afford to pay loadsa pennies. The plan? To buy a few acres and build our own house. Apparently, not only is building with straw relatively cheap, but it is eco-friendly as straw is essentially a waste product, and offers twice as much insulation as a "normal" house. Houses made from straw are not a fire hazard once treated properly either. On to a winner!

The best thing in my opinion though, is that once the frame of the house is up, then anyone can join in with the stacking of the straw bales - if that isn't going to satisfy my nesting instinct, then I don't know what will! Sounds like hard work, but great fun at the same time.

So, any offers with advice or labour?!

Hmm, labour runs against my natural inclinations, as you know, and I'm not remotely qualified to offer advice, but I would like to thank you for the enduring memory of you-know-who as one of the three little pigs...smiley - laugh
On a more serious note, I hope you can find some advice, but I'd be inclined to post in the "Ask the Community" page, which will get a much bigger response than in your journal.smiley - ok

I'm not really here

Is this going to be a permanent abode, or just while you build the 'real' house?
If you want an eco friendly house, then what about an underground one? Warm, secure, and you get to play with big diggers! Plus, the horses can tramp about above you, so a space saver too!

No advice on straw I'm afraid, but it gets dreadfully wet when it rains. And what about creepy crawlies in your bed? But if you go for it, then I'll come and help - as long as there is plenty of smiley - cider on offer. smiley - winkeye

Less of the casting aspersions on my chosen one...... smiley - tongueout

I'll take up that bit of advice on asking the community when I can be bothered to get round to it... not that I'm lazy or anything of course.

Like the new name Miss de Mina.

As to the house, it's to be a permanant thing - I wouldn't want to go to all that bother for a temporary dwelling.

Once the bales are treated properly (waterproofed, plastered and stucco'd) they are supposed to be pretty well resistant to the wet, fire and pests....or so I'm told. We're looking in to the practicalities at the moment. We're planning on going on a strawbuilding course - I wouldn't presume to know what I was doing without doing so!

Don't see cider being a problem down in Somerset....
