Are you a fan of the Gutenberg Project? At least public-domain works can now be read online, sometimes.
I am sitting in a hotel very near the main public library of Philadelphia right now - the city where Ben Franklin invented the public library, sort of. A friend went in there today, and found that all the 'old' books - from about 30 years ago - are in the reference section, and can't be checked out.
This is disgusting.

I love old stuff for the virtue of them being old, books especially though the contemporary works are great too especially science fiction, I bought an entire set of Charles Dickens works last time I was walking by a garage sale and the bindings were falling apart but I saw the elaborate pictures (okay I'm such an oddball I confess) and I just couldn't resist. Ah, temptations.

Not too much - the pool is closed. But it beats being in the house with hammering. And it's only for a week. Now, if I can figure out what to get for dinner...
on the Dickens - 'Tale of Two Cities' is one of my favourite novels.

Mine too! I liked Great Expectations and David Copperfield better (lol I just liked Mrs. Havisham she rocked) and I'm reading Bleak House but anyhow we did community service in Brit Lit because we were so saddened.

hey I've been to Philadelphia, about 20 years ago 
I remember going into a shop and asking for 20 Marlborough. The woman looked at me like I was mad. "You want 20 packs of Marlborough?" I quickly got the message you ask for a pack in the US, not 20 fags like over here!
