It's 20 minutes past two in the morning and my main instinctive feeling is that I need to go for a long walk.

That's a wonderful time to go for a walk. I like walking at night. Everything's dark and peaceful. There usually isn't anyone else around. It's just you your dog, and the sound of the interstate in the distance.
