Whoa, three minutes afterwards. This must be a record.
Anyway, I don't know that I have any "experience" in this area, but I know that when I'm writing, music helps quite a bit. Even moreso, certain kinds are more condusive to writing-- my best work is done under influance of Handel or Copland (but not Mozart, and I don't know why...).
Also, I want to welcome you to h2g2! If you write an introduction to your front page, all sorts of people can drop by and welcome you.

I listen to Chopin whilst working; orchestral music is too absorbing and pop music makes me want to sing along...

You're welcome.
Same thing with the orchestral music here... it has to be more atmospheric than melodic (which is weird, considering that Copland is pretty melodic), and even then nothing too unusually atmospheric (say, relaxation tapes would be a bad idea). Really unusual alternative rock seems to work well with me, too, though again it can't be too melodic or I'll sing along (I'm talking about the British praise band called Delirous?...).

I went to see Delerious? last term. they're new single has just come out over here Although, since it came out after my exams I can't tell if it would distract me from work.... I can't listen to Dido and work, though...

I don't know about work but it has ben proven that music in supermarkets affects how you shop.
If you want a reference I'll try and dig it out for you
