h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Something I've never quite got the knack of is how to make friends IRL. IVR it seems fairly easy, because people judge you on what you type alone. Conversations are easy to get into because you can /always/ get a word in, even if you aren't the assertive type. You just post what you want to post. You don't have to interupt, interject, ect. And no one interupts you.

People tell me to go out and make friends. However, in my experience making friends always happens by either a) an act of God, b) a consequence of fate, or c) a complete, random, happy accident. I'd be willing to accept any of those explainations for why I've made the few RL friends I have. What I won't accept is that it's been a process I brought about myself. The reason I won't accept this is I've thought about how I made the friends I have made, and I've tried doing the same things I did with them, and no friendships result. If an experiment has an irreproduceable result, then it doesn't work. Therefore I point to God, fate, and chaos.

If anyone can tell me otherwise please do. As always my journal is open for comment.

To get into contact with people you can also lead wars. It´s a very shortlived way of getting to know people but you can say, we were together until his last breath.

Luckily, we are taking part in that virtual war down at the musehome, so things wont turn out quite as bad...

I think, too, that it is very important to get to know RL people, whom you can get on with. Perhaps you can do like I did, and visit another researcher for a start. There is a lot of common denomenator (huh, is that the word???) and I guess most of the people I chatted to here, are quite willing to accept visits or meet on neutral ground...

I visited Ottox. It was realy an interesting visit, and we had a meetup here in the south of Germany.

There are many more ways to get to know people. One of my best friends is a taxidriver, whom I got to know in his taxi, because I had to drive with his company on a regular basis. So... that was an act of whatever...

Unfortunately, mind numbing tragedy is also a way to get to know people. I have several new friends after the candle light vigil last night.

No, I am a University student in a small town. The large grassy area on south campus was perfect for the whole town's community to show up and reflect. The mayor, two state representatives, a Native American flute player, and several preachers were present.

Yes. So little good from so much bad, though. And likely more bad to come.
