So over the holiday I brought home two female Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters. They are absolutely adorable and very active.
One looks like the very bottom picture on this page...

The "chocolate" coloured one.
The other looks like these "umbrous" ones...

Again it's the last picture. She's a bit darker though.
The chocolate one is the really friendly and relaxed one. She's also the escape artist (amusing story about that later). They are waaaaay smaller than they look. Apparently most of them is fur. They are currently cuddled up sleeping together awaiting names. They've been here for three days and were at my parents with me for a few days before that and I still haven't named them!
That's probably the least boring thing that's new with me so I thought I'd share it.

Grr, the sites are playing up! But i know about Russian ham(p)sters; viking's daughter has one & he returned totally ga-ga from his last visit "oh, oh, oh, she has the cutest, tiniest little animal i ever saw, it washed its face & i am sure it winked at me!"
*Yoda says "please, pretty please, may i have one too? I promise i will be very kind & teach it to play nicely."

Bunny says "What are those and why are they in our room?" He's not too pleased with them.
Have you ever had them before? I was told they are both female and the place I got them from claims to only carry females but I know these things can happen. I'm fairly sure they are both ladies. From what little I saw they seem to have the same parts but one of them is definately bigger than the other, apparently males tend to be larger. I'm reading alot about them now but I have no hamster experience and these are special little hamsters so any advice anyone has is appreciated.
Speciafically nutrition advice. Right now they're eating the food that came with the cage but it's made up of mixed seeds and very few pellets. I know they should be eating a pelleted diet so that they won't just pick out what they like and what they don't. I also read that they shouldn't have corn which is in this food. They don't eat the corn, they eat everything else so they figured that out on their own. Good job ladies!

I will eventually get pictures of them so I can share!
How are you two? I'm very good. I'm feeling quite lazy so I'm switching between the computer and the television.

I'm doing okay. Little tired. Baked some crescent rolls tonight. I may go take a rest.

I'm just a teensy-little bit on the tired side. I did some reading, watched an hour of TV & now I've got the radio on Windoze Media Player as I type.

Cuute! We've had two hamsters so far. They were both really sweet, and hyper throughout most of their life. One tried to make it's bed in the wheel of it's cage rather than it's house. It dragged bedding up the ramp and everything.

I've not actually had ham(p)sters myself, amazingly, one of the few critters i haven't!
As to sexing them; hmm; if you do end up with one of each the proof will arrive fairly quickly!
I don't know anything about food stuff, but if they are rejecting the corn, they seem pretty clued up.
*waves to jazz* Just said hi to a newbie you Aced, Chris something, lives on a boat, they posted to my guide entry on boating. I've invited them to join the madness that is the Eye thread! The more the merrier eh....

Sheesh, they're just little furry blobs, you be wantin' rats or Mongolian Desert Rats, they're much nicer. Of couse Ferrets and mongooses are best, especialy Meerkats, much nicer than little furry blobs...and ferrets dance.

TB, you're alive! I like rats. My younger brother used to have the sweetest rat. She was always riding around on his shoulder. I can't get a rat though, they take up much more space than 2 inch long dwarf hamsters.

Is your white? Cos if so, you only need buy 5 more dwarfs & you can have your own pantomime!
Ferrets, ah, ferrets....superb animals who do indeed dance, usually in either severe but temporary fits of temper or when they are laughing at something! (yes, they have a great sense of humour; ask any ferret owner!)
