ON CALL PHYSICIAN

Ok, I'm now an internin a 314 bed community hospital. Tonight there are three interns on call, a senior resident, an OB/GYN resident and a Critical Care Fellow (somebody who's finished residency, but is taking another year to become more specialized. . .In this that that means the Intensive Care Unit, i.e. critical care).

Anyway, there are about 250 beds for the three interns to cover tonight. I have the fewest beds (around 60) but I also have the sickest patients. A few patients with cardiac issues, a few with blood clots in their lungs, that kind of thing. I also have a few patients just waiting to die. Usually that's not such a bad thing. All my terminal patients tonight are pretty stable and I should make it to morning without a problem from that group.

There are a few mostly stable almostready to go home patients that scare me a lot more. Why? Because if they get sick, I should eb able to save them.

Me.

yikes

Things are okay.. I'm about to get a cell phone, my last major purchase before I embark on a mission of financial independence. Also, school is about to start, so lots of new things right now smiley - smiley

Glad no one is that sick! Must make for a quieter shift. smiley - smiley

Wow, the baby is already 9 months? Gosh. Glad that you all are well!

So, was school all that you thought it would be?

Any big plans for this year?

school was all that i thought it would be and more, both good and bad. lol. i had (and am still having) scheduling problems, and those are always a joy. my mum decided i have to pay my tuition next semester so there's that as well. (jeez i'm only 20) however, i looked fetching the first day of school and the boy i'd liked last semester said hi before i said hi to him (actually i forgot his name which is pretty terrible but there it is.. <lol&gtsmiley - winkeye

i'm doing well in my new project for theatre... so i'm pretty happy about that.. but i'm doing a seven-day week now (2 days working, five at school) so i'm pretty tired all the time... *shrug*

my amazing plans are to learn to save money (for the tutition) and to actually get b's in both of my classes i'm taking this semester. (as one is math, this would be a great accomplishment for me. hee!) other than that i'm just trying to stay afloat and hoping against hope that this first week wont make me sick. ;P All in all a good and exciting first week, hopefully signaling some interesting changes.

Sounds outstanding!

I had only minor money issues when I went through school (thank god!), but I had a ton of friends work their way through. the basic difference was that I worked 10-20 hours a week and they worked 40. But i ended up witha bunch more classes then them, so it evened out a bit.

I didn't matter in the long run.

And i found a great job bartending, so that was actually a lot of fun (plus I met lots of girls, I was single then, so that was good).

hee. yeah, bartenders get a lot of chicks. this one friend of mine, he's a total player, i think that is why he does bartending, aside from the good money. smiley - winkeye

second week is finally over.. i was really happy to have the day off on monday though. ;p I think by the time this semester gets over i'm going to pop from not having a day off. :P oh well.

yeah, after my mum can't get child support for me anymore i'm probably switching to half time, because it's cheaper in the short run ;p and i only actually take that many classes anyway.

i figure after i turn 22 (2 years and what, two months almost?) I will get a student loan if I end up needing it... and go back to the whole full time deal. smiley - smiley

i've decided my brain turned into a sieve over the summer. not only did i forget about a third of the people i know's names, but during the math test today i couldn't remember what 6 x 9 was. Oy. smiley - laugh
