Okay, so I've had a few beers.
But honestly, I had a bad teaching experience, and it's not that I'm looking for sympathy, or advice.
I just needed to demarcate the moment. And remind myself that getting drunk doesn't help in the least.

The beer won't hurt unless done in vast quantities over a period of time.

Beer is something I must not drink because I'm an alcoholic. Be careful Montana because it creeps up and suddenly your in trouble.
Please be careful. Anhaga has written an excellent piece on this aspect of alcoholism and its consequences. It is worth reading on his home page.

Oetzi, most of my family are active alcoholics, so I tend not to drink. Which means that on the rare occasions that I do, I tend to be a very cheap drunk (last night it was 4 pints!) and be severely hungover for several days. So yesterday was not normal for me, and I probably won't drink again for several months. In fact, I know I won't.
Bryce, it was just a student who really wants a lot of direction, and to be told EXACTLY what to write in a paper, and both Jim and I are deliberately vague, and that drives her crazy. She just got tighter and tighter and more closed off throughout class, and by the time she left, she was almost in tears.

MR are you sure you're not being too hard on your self. Is the student unused to how things work at University level with reguard to papers? In which case it's not your fault. Whilst you can be a nice as possible about wanting to help her, you can't be expected to baby sit your students and it's not school anymore. They have to learn to work on their own.

Do you have the personal tutor or mentor type system as in our Unis? Perhaps this student needs some extra help with studying techniques from the aforementioned (I do like that word) tutor/mentor.

She's an older student who transferred from a community college, and they tend to be more worried about doing well than other students. I talked to my advisor, who teaches the class, and he agreed with me, so there's no worries there, I just felt bad for her.

Montana, the 4 pints aren't a problem, you don't drink often enough for it to become one. And letting go now and again is good for the soul.
