Well, it's official then. 15 years of hard work and loyalty count for damn all in my workplace. And bear in mind at 15 years I am by far the senior man in plot, as it were.
Let me explain.
It's pretty much an open secret that our office has been struggling badly recently. In order to make some changes we have a new unit head and number 2. Their first move has been to move my line manager and best mate, Al, sideways (with his connivance. He'd had enough of being the jam in the sandwich). Therefore there is now a promotion going. Except...
They clearly aren't going to fill the post. At a meeting yesterday we were informed that what will be happening in the first instance is 'a re-allocation of management functions'. Which is to say they are devolving a number of the responsibilities that were Al's onto people at my level.
Or rather, onto one person at my level who has some 9 or 10 years less experience in the job than me. Which immediately gives him the insiide track if the promotion spot becomes available.
It appears that I have been put out in the sidings. It shouldn't come as a surprise as the new head of unit did this to me once before, insisting that I was removed from his team before he would take it over.
Doesn't stop me from being angry about it though.

I'm not really here Posted Nov 6, 2003
I'm still sorry to hear this. It does seem to be a way of giving people better jobs, sorry, *roles* without having to risk someone better actually having a change to get them.
Seen it myself over the last few months. Complain. Complain. Complain. If they don't appreciate you already, it's not going to hurt you.

I suppose there's the plus side, the other guy gets all the s**t but not the money that goes with it...
Maybe not much of a consolation though...
You could always make it your task to create as much work as possible for him

Complain. Ask 'why?'. That then puts the boss-man in a position of trying to explain his actions. Of course, you could just get the answer "because I don't like you", but it can't hurt to try.

I am having today to calm down and work on my CV, which i, to say the least a little rusty.
Tomorrow I shall go in and let them know exactly where I stand (ie trying to get out by any means possible) Let's see how they react to that. Giving s**t to the guy who has been preferred isn't really an option, he's a good friend and it's not his fault. (For Mina's benefit, it's Pearcey.)
By coincidence i actually have a lot of time off over the next week or so - I'm off Monday/Tuesday, then Friday and the following Monday. So they'll have plenty off opportunities to think about how much they miss me.
I shall also be off tomorrow afternoon because, just to prove that god is a maligm thug, I have learnt today that my father was taken into hospital last week and the family havbe been trying to get hold of me since then. E-mails apparently didn't occur to them, not indeed did my mobile number, or simply leaving a message at work... Still, it sounds as though he will be coming home next week, so it can't be that bad...
I'll just sit here quietly now and wait for the third one, shall I?

You know, bad news doesn't always come in threes. Sometimes it comes in three sets of three instead.

You're welcome Of course it could be that the news about your da was the third, and the first was so trivial you didn't notice it. There, that's more cheerful....

Do you think stabbing yourself with one of those wretched paper clip thingies counts? Because I did that yeserday. Bloody hurt, right under the fingernail.

Well there you go then. That's threee mishaps. Now all you've got to hope is it isn't one of those sets of three jobbies

Well unless the house actually falls down, difficult to imagine how anything could go wrong, really.

As opposed to the sulky King that gets his wife to arrange for people to be stoned to death when he couldn't get his way.
And a bowl of petunias?

Sounds like a bit of a wimp, really. I say, talking of ancient Kings, don't suppose you caught the really ok-ish adaptation of Riverworld on Sci-Fi last night?
The bowl of petunias is Ben's line. I've already stolen one of hers this week. Not brave enough to do it twice...
