Can't be a member of one where I work at present. But still make mine and colleagues greivances felt to management, sort of an unofficial shop steward.

Frankly I try and avoid Human Remains like the plague. We're only a small team though, so anything small I can just turn 'round and shout at the boss

Every one should be in a Union. See Orcus' other half's difficulties for the reason why.
As to 'Not being able to belong' well, no, not true. They can make life difficult for you but it as illegal for the employer to stop you joining as it is for the Union to operate a closed shop.
We won't be working to rule, as that means getting Union ratification, and it leaves all the non-union members out on a limb. What we will be doing is 'withdrawing our good will'. So we will only be working our contracted hours up to the individual then whether it's on a daily or a weekly basis), refusing to work during our statutoraly guaranteed lunch hours and, not doing over time for the good of the firm, refusing to cover after hours conferences. That type of thing.

My employers are an American company which I think is how they get into the Terms and conditions of Employment no membership of a trade union

Not *everyone* can belong to a union- Policemen and members of the armed forces, for instance. As for closed shops, well it's not that long since Equity operated one, and getting jobs in the acting business wothout an Equity card is still hard work.

That's a cultural not a legal thing though. And as for American firms being able to get round the law by being american, well that's despicable, frankly.
The Police have their owb highly effective representation. Woe betide anyone crossing the professional body who represents the boys in blue.
Thank you for the kind words, Mina. If this fails then the next step is an open letter to the DPP and the head of HR to point out what a dump the office is and how much pressure we are under. I suspect that my immediate boss is on the verge of resingning and wil then claim constructive dismissal, which might be good for a laugh.

Oh yes, I know they have their own body, I was just pointing out that there are exceptions to the rule that everyone can join a union.
Have you got your new email addy sorted yet, or are you still using the old one?

At the moment you can use either, though I anticipate binning the old one shortly as it does appear that it will be a very effective spam filter.

I'm not really here Posted Oct 8, 2003
I thought that the police are allowed to join a union, they are just not allowed to strike?
Blues Shark, I know what a pit your office can be, and I do hope that whatever action is taken will be effective in shaking things up.

I thik it's a moot point whether one considers the Police Federation to be a union or not, really. Certainly i think they are not allowed to strike.
Well, we are going to give it the old college try, as they say.

You should have had an e-mail by now with the new oner on. I'll obviously have to resend it.
All sounds very mysterious if you can't tell me here.

Yeah but it would still be gossip. You wouldn't know it was made up, pass it on and then it really would be gossip.
