The problem with making journal entries is that they go on and on down the page and eventually take up so much room that people get bored scrolling down and never get to the really interesting stuff -which is the articles. Is there some way old entries can be deleted? If not - why not?

Sorry, can't answer that one, but I'd love to know why not. Also why one can't get rid of very old postings where the topics have completely changed (I think FFmike has something on this)
Just wanted to say" Gong he fat choy "to you too.
Cathay Pacific sponsors a rather nice parade here. This year it went on for over 2 hours in the sun, with lots of dragon dancers (as opposed to the usual lions
(I loved Raffles too. Bought some very expensive food-typre Christmas presents there which went down very well in England.

We saw your parade on television. It looked very colourful. We live in a small town, Mantin, where the only foreigners they see are the expat teachers at the boarding school here. To celebrate New Year, ten of us went to the local Chinese restaurant for their ten people, ten course celebratory dinner. The restaurant was packed but we had booked our table, fortunately. The first course was a colourful dish that, traditionally, everyone has to toss together with their chopsticks and shout things like 'Prosperity!' and 'Long Life!' and 'Good Luck'. We did this - as we had seen the others doing - and the whole restaurant rose up and clapped and cheered us. And then all through the evening they kept raising their glasses and waving their chopsticks at us. My seventeen-year-old daughter was grateful that she decided not to join us - there goes mother making an exhibition of herself again. - So we didn't have a parade, but we had a lot of fun.

That sounds like real fun. Tell your daughter to be thankful she's yours and not mine. When my children visited me in Shanghai I embarrassed the socks off the younger one by diving into restaurant kitchens and pointing at various dishes that looked promising. And getting bicycles by train from the factory where they were made to Gdansk where they would be ridden involved a full-scale pantomime in 3 languages.

It would be even better if you could "unsubscribe" from a thread i.e. choose not to be told that it has been updated - that "you too can drive people to the brink of insanity" is achieveing its purpose by never leaving my "recent entries" list!

I couldn't resist looking at the forum 'you too can drive people to the brink of insanity', but I managed to resist posting this message there as I didn't want your problem. This is defininately another glitch - not being aboe to unsubscribe from manic forums!!
