The chain is a unit of length equal to 66 feet (22 yards). It is subdivided into 100 links or 4 rods. There are 10 chains in a furlong, and 80 chains in one statute mile. In metric terms, it is 20.1168 m long.


We all know that a "usual" CHAIN consists of links
But! How many links does it take ? to count as a chain ?

2 links - 3 links ? more ? and has this poser been discussed at university and academic levels to determine, or even government levels ? to specify an answer ?

as in!

a necklace chain/bracelet chain/ padlock chain/ any length of chain etc etc - what can be "classed" as a chain ? as in - how many links ?
Is 2 links a chain ? is 3 links a chain ? or upwards ?

I thought back to when I studied Knot Theory at University, and would suggest:

One 0 would be a knot (in fact 0 is known as the Unknot as it is a loop with no knot in it, whereas something like the Trefoil Knot http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b3/Blue_Trefoil_Knot.png/1200px-Blue_Trefoil_Knot.png is a loop that cannot be stretched into a plain 0 shape without cutting the loop)

Then two 0 knots linked together is known as a Link 8

So I would say three 0s would be a Chain

but a loop is only a loop when on it's own, add another loop and it is still only "a loop" if not intertwined with the first loop
and (cheeky)a knot it neither a loop nor part of a link.
