Few if any relationships, are free from hurtful things that one partner does to another. If I made a list of all the unkind words, thoughtless choices, and many other hurtful things that ***** and others have done to me in the past, it would stretch for miles.
When I think of the way I've reacted to those hurts, a realization hits me: I've been just as guilty at times. Even if I felt justified in my actions, is it fair for me to say that others didn't feel they were just as justified? How do I know what was truly in their mind at those times, or what led them to choices that clearly didn't make them happier, or me?
Returning a hurt with another hurt may give me temporary feelings of satisfaction, but it does not bring me true happiness in my relationship with anyone. Yet when I don't pay them back in some way, or react in anger, it seems like I'm telling them it's o.k. to hurt me. It seems very confusing at times.
the Karmic PingPong Law

If a person walks up to you, rages red in your face, blustering about this and that (things that don't really matter), and you sit calmly, aware that this individual is not in a good space, and let it roll off you like water off a ducks back, and return serene calmness - then you are left with his left over energy, that which he dispersed by gnawing on you, all because you did not hit the ball of nastiness back to him. You can then use this for whatever you like - but if you participate and toss grumpiness and sourness back at the being having a bad day, you are responsible for perpetuating the crabbiness. Let it stop with you (with me) - nice mantra to have. Get cutoff in traffic, flipped off in traffic, smile serenely back, wave even - startle people with kindness and stop the crap in midstream. This does not imply that you condone the childish or destruction behaviour, it shines a light to show that there is another way to act, and sez that you will not stoop to the age old Karmic Ping Pong game of destructive volleys.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
