Icelandic Sagas
The Sagas are historical novels written in Iceland in the 12th and 13th centuries about the lives of the Vikings(9th to 11th centuries).
These stories are thought to have been passed-down orally before being recorded, often anonymously, several hundred years later. Of the authors that are known the most renowned is Snorri Sturluson(1179-1241).
For many years the sagas were the only real evidence of the Viking discovery of North America. This story is told in two sagas:
Greenland Saga and Eirik's Saga which are collectively known as the Vinland Sagas(the name given to the area by the Norse because of the abundance of vines). However, while the basic facts in these sagas are beyond reasonable doubt, they do contradict each other in some important details so it would be a mistake to take them too literally.
A good modern day comparison might be the way that Hollywood interprets historical events such as Braveheart or Titanic.
