*bursts in excitedly*
Thought I'd tell you: I just saw the complete Clangers collection DVD. I actually remembered some of the episodes from 30 years ago!
I'd forgotten how "green" the Clangers message was. Your page reminded me of the Iron Chicken's thrifty habitats, but I'd forgotten how careful and polite the Clangers were, or how environmentally conscious the "narrative" was. If you haven't seen the video, cadge a copy of it; even the music is even better than I remembered!
Yours,
making a penetrating whistling noise that is soothing only to me,

wheeeeeee
That sweet old swannee whistle, ah I can hear its gentle soothing tones now. Thanks for the nostalgia hit ecotype
I read Oliver Postgate's autobiography recently and I think there was a lot of himself in the Clangers, he comes over all thoughtful, polite and playful too.
I saw a CD of a 'Clangers opera' in a shop recently. Or I think I did. Maybe I dreamt it. It doesn't sound very likely...

You didn't dream it! The DVD which I have lists the first movement only, of a Clangers Opera which presumably didn't get finished. It's a nice Clangers story which includes the Music Trees (always a favourite as they combine two things close to my heart!) and the Iron Chicken of course. There is a music CD of most of the Clangers soundtracks which also includes the Opera (it's really just a lengthy soundtrack in itself).
So, if anyone asks you what you want for Yule, there's a prime candidate for a pressy!

Amazing! I didn't think I had that much imagination or hallucinatory experiences. Must see if I can find me a copy sometime.
The music trees. Aaah *sits back in happy reverie
I'm almost afraid to watch the old shows in case they don't live up to my memories. Sounds like they still work for you though so maybe I should take the risk.

Go on - watch 'em!
You know you want to!
And I can certainly recommend it. I think the Clangers must have been a very important influence on my earliest understanding of green issues. So my buying the DVD was purely for educational and political reasons.
at least, that's my story!

I ripped off the wrappers, flung it on the CD player and listened with unrestrained bouncing enthusiasm seeing all the pictures again in my head (particularly the Iron Chicken of course )
