Just a Guy
A brief overview. Will edit as and when. Interesting stuff about me first. For the Sci bit read on.
About me:
Amongst other things a lover of good food/wine. Enjoy longhaul travel (give me a 747 and I'm anybody's as it were.) Used to do contribution work for BBC Local Radio ages ago. Once got involved in similar capacity with CH4 for a couple of series. I miss being involved with broadcasting. Also into English History coupled to an interest in archaeology. Amateur genealogist of 30 years. Grabbed the opportunity for early retirement last May and having escaped now enjoying 100% free time. I also number crunch for SETI, or more accurately my computer number crunches, I watch. Obviously into Hitchhikers and Douglas Adams other stuff + Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape et al.
Open to making new friends in the world of h2g2 where I feel not so strangely at home.
Sci bit:
'Life' as far as I am concerned is still just 'work in progress'. At least as I write life is still in progress. The 'Universe' I have not seen (apart from the local bits), and as I have not yet experienced 'Everything' am open to offers/suggestions. The last part is open to negotiation/sealed bids etc.
On the whole I consider myself to be a reasonably educated guy with a well balanced view of the world, even with all the weird stuff that goes on. I could write objectively about many things but for h2g2 will stick to the galactic bee in my bonnet if I wore one. Which I don't.
Consider this as many have: The galaxy in which we sit contains around 300 billion stars with added value in that there are calculated to be lots and lots of planets whizzing around many of them and indeed some have already been found. In turn there are billions of galaxies, although counting them is difficult as the universe is supposed to be infinite, maybe. Ipso facto therefore and in simplistic terms, logic [what?] dictates that there just has to be someone else out there. Accepting this as I do then:
1. Where are they? (SETI is trying hard. See the Drake equation in Journal entry and in the 'Other Worlds' entry submitted to the Guide.)
2. Would we want to contact them? Some would.
3. Would they want to be contacted? Don't know until we have contacted them. Er....
4. Is the world ready for such contact? No! The reaction of the populace is too awful to contemplate.
I could go on about this for hours but my keyboard won't stand it and I'm sure the site won't allow me. See my suggested Guide entry put up for Peer Review on 11.02.2006.
Happy to converse with (almost) anyone.
