Holiday....
Posted Dec 22, 1999
I'm off-line (on holiday) from 23/12/1999 to 28/12/1999 so enjoy my absence .
May check in in the mean time - depends how dire xmas TV gets...can't believe they've let Noel Edmonds back on the box.

Sleeping bags
Posted Dec 17, 1999
When I sleep in a sleeping bag, even on a bed, I invariably wake up with aching legs - why?

Migrating
Posted Nov 18, 1999
When "migrating" is used in the context of Animals it always means a return trip.
In software engineering it's always one way. Also, the verb "to migrate" really annoys me - as does "to leverage". Programmers should not be allowed to make their own words at all!

New Irish words
Posted Nov 16, 1999
Unfortunately they're not strictly "English" so can't go in my Dublin English guide, but of interest anyhow:
Stroansha: A big lazy lump of a girl. I'm not sure what it says about a country that they should need a specific word for such a thing.
Under: Same word as in dictionary English but with a different usage - "Did ya put any food under these kids?".

Questions without adequate answers
Posted Oct 11, 1999
We all know the typical question that can't be answered, like
"Where would we be without rhetorical questions?", but recently some questions have been really troubling me:
1) Why is there only one Monopolies and Mergers commission?
2) If (as my school textbook states) radio waves pass straight through the human body unchanged, why is my TV reception dependent on whereabouts in my living room I sit?
3) Given that I spend over 90% of the daylight hours with my eyes open (no - I do, honest), why are my eyelids equally tanned as the bridge of my nose?
4) If a black hole is infinitely dense, why doesn't it contain all the mass in the universe? Ok - I don't want to know the answer to that one, as I won't understand it.
