Welcome, one and all
Once upon a time a man laid flat on his back in a field in Belgium. At first glance his reason for being there looks decidedly suspect and a quick phone call to the Belgian equivalent of the RSPCA seems to be in order. But no, this man is the hero of our story. One time hospital porter, barn builder, chicken shed cleaner, bodyguard, radio producer, script editor of Doctor Who and visionary, Douglas Adams. It was this last career that was occupying him in the field in Innsbruck, staring up at the stars, slightly sozzled, dreaming of a guide to show the drifters & layabouts where they fitted in the grand scheme of things and exactly how to get there with the minimum number of toilet stops.
The surface of Douglas' brain may have been the furthest that this idea travelled, if this wonderful man hadn't WRITTEN IT DOWN ON PAPER. He then showed the paper to the BBC & they liked it so much that they gave him lots of money to go away.
When he came back he had a radio script tucked neatly into his jacket and the rest, to coin a cliche, is history.
I would just like to say what a wonderful idea I think this is. I remember first reading the Hitch-Hikers Guide way back in 1983.(I had missed the original radio series due to the fact that I was a snotnosed little kid in home made shorts).
I dreamt of being Ford Prefect, roaming the galaxy, looking for interesting things to write guide entries about, knowing where my towel was and having may 300 page labour of love, edited down to 'Mostly Harmless' and now I can.
Thats funny. I can't think of a single thing to write about.
Just in case you want to know anything about me. My real name is Mark Davis, I'm a 29 year old postman (Yes it really is as boring as it sounds). I live in Sunny Donny (Doncaster to non-racegoers) and I've got used to the strange smell (visit sometime and see what you think!). My main interests are computers, roleplaying, reading, music (Radiohead, Travis, etc) and Malt Whiskey.
If any of the above facts are apocryphal or wildly innaccurate then I apologise unreservedly, as I have no eye for detal (sic).
A special thank you for the man or woman who invented brackets (whoever they are).

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
