Let's all meet up in the year 2000
Posted Dec 20, 1999
Right - that's just about it from me for 1999. I'm about to head North for the festive season, and will thus be away from my beloved computer for a couple of weeks. I hope to pay a quick visit to h2g2 during the holiday period courtesy of West Yorkshire's only Internet cafe, but won't be around here much until January 4.
So, fellow hitch-hikers, until we meet again - have fun, and watch out for low-flying reindeer-powered vehicles.

A Christmas *hit
Posted Dec 20, 1999
Good to see South Park's "Mr Hankey, The Christmas Poo" in the UK singles Top 10 in Christmas week.
After all, it's traditional for there to be s%@t in the charts at Christmas.

Tony Blair's right-hand man
Posted Dec 20, 1999
If you've had a look through the links on my page, you may have gathered that I am neither a Christian nor a fan of the advertising industry. You can probably imagine, then, how pleasantly surprised I was tonight to see a truly great billboard ad promoting the Christian Aid charity.
More specifically, the ad expresses that charity's support for the cancellation of Third World debt, and strongly suggests that recent moves in that direction have been inadequate.
The ad features the slogan "All mouth" and a photo-montage depicting several of the world's top finance ministers without their trousers - alluding to the UK expression "all mouth and no trousers", i.e. all talk and no action.
Most of the ministers are shown with bare legs and boxer shorts bearing the designs of their respective national flags. However, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, is provided with a very skimpy pair of Union Jack briefs.
Also, his right hand is pictured right next to his crotch.
Could Christian Aid possibly be implying that Mr. Brown is a complete and utter banker?

Tennant's extra

I would just like to congratulate the ever-entertaining Pet Shop Boys on coming up with the best song title I've heard in ages: "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk".
It seems highly appropriate that the single in question is being released on January 3 - just after the season of festive excess, when most of us drink like !

In the knicker time
Posted Dec 11, 1999
FA Cup Third Round day seems the perfect time to write about my favourite football story for some time: Reading FC's forthcoming "Pants Day".
(For the benefit of non-Brits, I should first explain that the word "pants" is sometimes used as an adjective in Britain, meaning poor or sub-standard: e.g. "Did you enjoy that film you went to see last night?" "No, it was absolute pants." However, it is also used in the internationally-understood sense, to mean knickers or underpants).
Well, Reading have been doing pretty badly of late, and their fans are getting fed up. For this reason, some of them are organising a "Pants Day" on December 18, when their hapless team is at home to Wrexham. They are encouraging fellow fans to comment upon the state of the club by bringing along spare pairs of knickers and waving them in the air during the game. As the organisers say in a statement which can be read on the homepage for the club fanzine, "Hob Nob Anyone?" - http://www.royals.cx - "it's pants for pants, really". As they also point out, it's got to be better than invading the pitch or doing anything else that might endanger people's safety. What's more, in a final gesture of loyalty, they're encouraging those who want to take part to buy new pairs of offical Reading FC pants specially for the occasion from the club shop!
I really hope it goes well for them. If only disgruntled footie fans always expressed themselves so peacefully and imaginatively, I'd never have to feel embarrassed about my obsessive love for the game.
