The spice trade
Hi everyone I am spotteddick2, well that is not my real name, it is just that I am a Richard, so therefore also a Dick, my favorite pudding as a kid was Spotted Dick, so when joining the food boards I wanted to be spotteddick, unfortunatly it was taken so not to be out done I called myself spotteddick2 or SD2 for short.
My main aim is to meet people that enjoy the fine things in life, I love art, dabble a little and studied art presentation and history at the then HdK in Berlin (before the wall came down). I am a marine engineer by profession and traveled the seven seas in my 20s. I have since the late 70s been a land lubber working in Germany, first as a Establishment Works Consultant and now as a Technical Engineering Planner (actually the same thing).
My great loves are art, theatre, classical music, ballet, opera, but most of all traveling to see and hear them. I love food, cooking and eating it, I am a huntsman, an angler and also have and will travel anywhere to follow my pastimes and hobbies.
Whilst traveling the seas I was in the middle and far east and became interested in the spice trade, routes and the spice uses. I have been putting together a book on this for many years on and off (more off than on). I have now decided it is time to start doing the hard work getting the facts down in chronological order.
To this end I am trying to find out what was the first ship that actually landed chilies in Europe, I think it was in Portugal and was on one of the Columbus ships, but has anyone any definitive history or the ships manifests?
