Bartered Bride
Posted Nov 7, 1999
A fun night last night watching the Glyndebourne touring company doing 'The Bartered Bride' at Milton Keynes new theatre/opera house. I'm told by some real opera buffs that the hall 'lacks resonance', but I enjoyed it. The main problem with the place is the lousy access.
Finding the place wasn't too bad, but then came the car park. Luckily we were in a small car, because the ramps in the car park demand a ridiculously small turning circle. There were visible marks on the walls where larger cars had failed to pass unscathed.
Then came the hall itself. Narrow corridors leading to the auditorium, mde worse by the fact that they wouldn't open the doors until five minutes before the performance. The result was that many people, who'd been queueing for 10 minutes, still weren't inside when the announcement came that 'the performance is about to start.' Luckily they had the sense to delay things until everyone was seated, so the dark mutterings of an impending riot which I heard coming from behind me were unfulfilled.

Another week goes by...

Things are definitely hottng up between Carol & Jon on the Alt.Jokes .Limericks newsgroup. Meanwhile I've been sufferring writer's block, so I've had to content myself with lurking. Work has got rather silly on the Y2K front. They offered a ridiculously small amount to try to get us to come in. The union asked for a ridiculously high figure, and there seems no prospect (at the moment) of any meeting of minds. Maybe that's not possible between managers & techies. Management imposed a block on all leave from November to February, so I told them there's no chance of getting me to provide any sort of millennium cover unless I'm on leave. I think that confused some of them.

Next time I Switch into a browser after downloading a whole heap of Newsgroup stuff, I must remember to close the news reader. Maybe that way it wont go and mark everything I just downloaded as read before I've had a chance to read it. Oh well. Back to the reader to trawl through the whole of each group & try to find out what I've missed so far.
