Evening all
Welcome to my bit. If I've understood all the instructions correctly, when I press the 'Update Introduction' button this hastily typed nonsense will become my personal h2g2 homepage text. It's a little intimidating to tell the truth, I've posted an occasional message to a forum or discussion site but this is the first time I've had true editorial control.
I used to be an editor, it was a good job except for some aspects of dealing with authors. They're difficult people in many respects. Don't get me wrong, I admire people who write a great deal. But, if you've ever had to ensure a writer met a deadline, checked their proofs or answered a query - you'll know what I mean.
But the shoe is on the other foot now (or the red pen is in someone elses hand). This time, I'm the writer! So I think that I shall just have to pop over to Kew for the afternoon/finish an article for someone else/spend the evening making quince jelly instead of writing the text for this page. But I will get it done ... I promise ... I can certainly let you have a first draft by the end of next week, an outline at the very least.
