Raleigh came from Devon? A quick google search suggest so. That's genuinely fascinating. I wonder why none of the sources I looked at noted anything like that. There's something very hootoo-esque about this Devon-Ocracoke connection you've made, Rich.

It's an odd one, isn't it? I did try saying the words out loud as you suggested in one of the Entries (I think, or was it on your journal? Anyway) and when I said 'hoi toide' to myself I actually presumed I was saying it wrongly. But there is a definite, if a little tenuous, connection there. I wonder if any old Devonian words are similar to Ocracoke words? That would be interesting to find out. I could surely find out a bit about the origins of some of the crew of the Tiger. I presume you wouldn't go all over the country to find your 'average' crew members, you'd just pick them up locally.
