...I'm falling asleep from surfeit of and brainstrain... The favourite clue seemed to be: "I'm just the thing for girls about town/ I can't go down a chimney up/I can go up a chimney down". The dear girls in question hadn't encountered that old riddle before so were inordinately entertained, thankee Lor'

The week is extremely busy and occasionally fraught. We've got a big group in the hotel who book for breakfast, luch and dinner as well as afternoon tea and morning coffee, so it's a bit tiring and stressful at times.
Anyway, I'm off to do bird surveying tomorrow at the heath, which is always good and relaxing

Elfrida Posted Apr 26, 2006
Hope the surveying went well and was relaxing and as sunny there as it has been here. I trust your guests are harmonious
A particularly difficult-to-please group of visitors that I remember from the hotel my parents worked in brought their sojourn to a close by clustering around Steve the (normally even-tempered) pianist on the terrace and instead of buying him several for playing their requests all week complained about their stay, which wouldn't have annoyed him excessivly if one of them hadn't added "And the music wasn't up to much, either" as an afterthought.... Steve said he only stood up quickly but they were all standing so near each other and the ornamental fountain was, unfortunately, very close...

Actually, I gave up on all plans for the day and enjoyed a good solid morning in bed; then my pond liner came, so it was all action stations for a bit
Most of the guests seem to be behaving themselves now...
Hope you enjoyed the film!

Elfrida Posted Apr 26, 2006
Yes ta the film was excellent I'm never really sure who enjoys these animated movies more, my nephews or me...
Ooh..a pond liner! What will you put in, and which plants? Will you have water-lilies?
Ooh-arr!
Skankyrich [?] Posted Apr 26, 2006
The animated films have tended to appeal to adult audiences much more recently, haven't they? So many jokes seem to be asides to the grown ups!
I've done a journal on the garden - F1900573?thread=2781700 I'm not having fish, as they tend to eat the wildlife, I'd rather have newts and frogs - anything fishwise that goes in tends to get eaten by herons, anyway. I'm not really a gardener, just a humble conservation worker, so the whole plan is more about habitat creation than serious planting anyway. I've just got oxygenators, a few water lilies and some reeds at the moment.

What an inspiring thread!... I can see what you mean about fish and creating a habitat. Glad you have water-lilies as they're so beautiful (I battle with water-colour and water-colour's winning at the moment but I like to paint flowers; was one of my favourite things when I lived on a boat for a while)
Hope you're having a good rest and as I am

Skankyrich [?] Posted Apr 26, 2006
Well, I'm glad you think it's inspiring - to me it's just a big, random set of ideas that may or may not come together
So you make beautiful music, you paint... is there no end to your talents?
I'm currently enjoying a good , but will be moving on to some good real
quite shortly. No, I don't have a beard

What's your favourite real
? I used to work near Ma Pardoe's home brewery in the Black Country - that was my introduction to the real thing. The first time some of us went to the pub for lunch I only had a half (promise!) and was no good for the rest of the day...
I don't paint well but I enjoy it

Skankyrich [?] Posted Apr 26, 2006
Well, I don't climb well, don't garden well, don't know all the birds I survey, play guitar very badly and make lumpy cheese sauce. But I enjoy it all!
My favourite real ale is probably Bager's Golden Glory, a lovely fruity beer that's perfect on hot summers days. Close behind is anything like Fursty Ferret, Waggle Dance or Tanglefoot. I recently came across a called something like Rich's Farmyard Brew, which I bought for the name alone and was too bewildered afterwards to note the name of
We're quite lucky here, with the Teignworthy and Exmoor breweries - both of which seem incapable of brewing a poor beer - close by. We also have the Sharpham winery, which makes wines that seriously compete with the best in Europe.
