Oddcasting the Meet?
Skankyrich [?] Started conversation Apr 26, 2007
If you haven't been paying attention, the idea of the Aviators is starting up again with a view to providing AV content for EG Entries. We've set up a group on Yahoo - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/h2g2aviators/ - and there's a couple of early attempts on my YouTube space at http://www.youtube.com/skankyrich
There was an idea that the Aviators might put together an Oddcast once in a while featuring more informal AV. I reckon the London Meet would be a great place to start. Is anyone is going with a digital camera that does video/mpeg, and if so would you be prepared to film a few minutes as a video blog we could link from the Post report?
I can handle the editing, upload it to an 'official' page and even overlay commentary. If more than one person wants to film a bit, great. All I need is a willing person (or two) to film a few bits of the day, and I'll handle the rest. Anyone interested?
Meanwhile, feel free to investigate the Aviators further

It might be a bit short notice, waht with the various entrails of PCs strewn all over the badgerflat at teh moment, but if I can get my hands on the olempus digital recorder and sony microphone I might* be able to get some audio content... if that would be any use? I think I've video thinggy on my phone but... I couldn't say for sure if its any good

Fantastic! That would be incredibly useful, as even if no-one can get video footage I could overlay photos with audio content. As it's going to be a YouTube clip, we'll need some visual footage as well of some sort, but audio would be superb as well. No probs if you can't, but with a few photos I could easily knock something together to go alongside your audio. Record what you can, and I'll take care of the rest - in spirit, I'm buying you a already...

Hey! Skanks, I haven't forgotten you! Where has this week gone? The UP is still foremost in my mind, but sorting the saturday meet has taken precedent.
I do have a video feature on my camera, and have a spare battery, but video is so power hungry.
I'll see what I can do!
Just really you couldn't be here, but you always have a crashing space here if you need it!

It all really depends on weather I can find the olympus amongst the current disarray of computer parts and generall kinda messy house since I was away for a while I think... I'm pretty sure I saw the mic the other day and put it somewhere.... so just the recorder and get some batterys which I think I've got tons of actually... oh... heck yeh and reminding myself how to use it as its sat unused for over a year If I could get it up and going might be able to find some 'interesting' audio of the meet... maybe some cameos by willing researchers speaking on to it with the backgorund noise of ... mayhem in the pub mind... I've been thinking about doing this for yonks... and never gotten it going yet s to find the recorder

No problem with the UP, mate - no rush whatsoever!
If you can get anything from the Meet video-wise, then great, but don't put yourself out. In terms of an Oddcast, it seems like such a great opportunity to start, but don't fret about it. Any snippet would help, though
Hopefully I'll see you in the autumn, anyway - it was just a coincidence that this is the worst weekend of the year for me to be away. Have a great time!

Sorry, 2legs Good luck finding it - if that's what you have in mind, I could certainly put together an Oddcast with photos alone! If it works, we could think about making it an occasional feature.
Don't let this stop anyone volunteering moving footage, though...

When you say 'milk maids', do you mean 'drunken yobbos that smash up everything they can find'? If you, you'll imagine the fall-out is likely to be unpleasant

This all sounds very mysterious, technical & quite probably pervy. Lights, camera, action....bring on the laptop dancing badgers.
What's all this about a weekend surrounded by milkmaids & ageing Welsh crooners eh Skanky? It's not unusual

Pity you can't make it Who is it you've got in this weekend? Young farmers? Conservative farmers yob association or some such I seem to recall.... Well I've found the microphone which is a good start (its got a built in mic in the recorder, but the quality is just so so so much better from the little sony mic) Mind... I have been thinking about doing this for years and not gotten to do it yet so don't hold ya s I'll have a hunt for the recorder tomorrow whilst doing my laundry and getting things sorted for Saturday

That wasn't quite the Tom Jones I was refering to!

This is it, 2legs - Saturday is the day you get this sorted. The first ever h2g2 Oddcast could rely entirely on you finding that mic...
Yes, it's the Young Farmers. A weekend of drunken nobs and yobs with too much money, bodily hair, lager and testosterone, and that's just the milkmaids. Torquay obviously rejoices at this annual festival of idiocy, but frankly we need the money. I don't mind drunks enjoying themselves; I'm not averse to a tipple. I do mind random violence for no apparent reason. The only thought that gives me any joy is that someone is bound to use our green, untreated, algae-ridden outdoor pool (not in use til May Bank Holiday) for a late night skinnydip.

They're back on tour! yet another excuess for a random bunch of people off th einternet to meet up and get drunk... whilst listening to music I shall find the olympus I shall... actually... even if I can't I think we've a newer digital recorder somewhere that lodger got given by a rep a few months back... though I've not even seen it yet... so he might have lost it already Sometimes I think we've too much technology in this house/flat.... about four PCs, three or so laptops, and thats just what I know about and can remember right.... I oughta go to bed or something I guess.. soon then find the digital recordering tkhingmajiggi in the morning...

Going back to Aviating and Oddcasts...
It strikes me that a huge number of people use YouTube. There may be a huge pool of people there who could easily be drawn to h2g2. One of my clips, a piece without editing or commentary about fishing in The Gambia, has drawn 200+ views in three months despite the lack of tags and the fact that it's a very obscure subject. If a few of us could pull together and get some seriously good content going, it could be an enormous step forward for the site. It could pull in a significant number of people that would never have visited us otherwise. If it doesn't, well, it's been fun making clips, but if anyone has the slightest urge to create AV I'd seriously suggest following the links at the top of this thread.
I have my first subscriber - I think he's a well-known bluesman of this 'ere parish, but that's a fairly wild guess...

Not into YouTube and I am not sure I want to subject some of my more 'delicate' frikends to that, so willl rethink.
I do believe in asking before posting. Leave it with me!

I was intending on getting permission from anyone on film anyway, MMF. If anyone doesn't want to be on it, they won't be, simple as that. I wouldn't want or expect that, which is why I've stated the objective to potential filmers right at the start. To me personally it's no different to having snaps of people online, but I would respect anyone's wishes in that respect.
YouTube is the only way we can get AV connected to the site. We stand still or try to go forward. The simple choice is to go with YouTube or have no AV for the foreseeable future - if we could get it onsite, then that would be perfect, but we can't. I would rather at least try to innovate. If you can take a look at the clips I've produced so far and seriously tell me they don't add anything to the Entries, I'll give up now

Found the olympus digital recorder, have the soney mic I found las tnight now I need two AAA batterys for the olympus and a single AA I think for the mic and then all I have to do is remember how to use the dann thing I'll try to ask people as and when if I'm recording them if they're alright with it potentially ending up online oooo I'm having a thought..... .... cue sound of Roymondo's 'debauchery' song, gradually fading out.... as fades in the noise of the debauched sound of a HooToo meet in a pub in full swing.... Oo pity I'm not goign to the offical afternoon thingy to get some nice recordings there... ... sound of HooToo Meet in pub in full swing fades out.... sound of train station (kings cross I guess as that is where I'll be).... fades out as somewhat quieter in pub fades back in.... voices of some HooTooians at the meet (slight fade in of the debauchery song)... more voices from at the meet.... glasses chinking..... (slight fade in of debauchery song)... annoucement of pub quizz results.... sound of HooTooians at a meet going 'what' as results read out...
