There are a few different schools of thought about history - there is a whole Ology about how people make history fit their viewpoints. Historiography, right?
I do know a fair bit about history (he said modestly), but you two lads are fighting a war that I'm not joining

Fair enough. I wasn't meaning to spoil your thread. Neither was I meaning to fight...just throwing in some slightly more up to date information in (I'd hoped) a fairly neutral way.
*However* I'm afraid I have now left a rather more barbed comment in that thread...although I think it's one you might have some sympathy with.

I just find that the effort of decoding what the guy's wittering on about isn't rewarded by anything when you get to the end. My eyes glaze over - I think it's my internal anti-bullshit filter

Also, for a "historian" he's made one or two elementary factual mistakes that made me stop taking him seriously some time ago.
